How to Compare Jamón Prices Without Comparing the Wrong Things

Two jamón prices can look miles apart while describing quite different things. One may be for a small ready-sliced pack; another for a whole bone-in leg. Even two similar-looking packets can differ in category, breed information or slicing method.

A useful comparison begins by deciding what you want to buy. Then check the weight and format before judging which option offers the value you need.

An example of comparing sliced packs

80g sliced pack £12 £15
100g sliced pack £14 £14
150g sliced pack £24 £16

Put sliced packs on the same scale

The figures above are invented examples to explain the calculation, not Casa Manolo prices. Divide the price by the weight in grams, then multiply by 100. In the example, the £14 pack has the lowest price per 100g despite not having the lowest ticket price.

Use current product prices when shopping. Include any relevant delivery charge in the total order cost, especially when comparing a small order with a larger one.

Compare the ham category as well as the number

A lower price per 100g does not make two different hams equivalent. Read the feeding category, breed percentage where stated, origin information and slicing format. These help explain what you are paying for.

It can be useful to make two comparisons: first between similar products, then between the different experiences you might want. A daily sandwich filling and a special tasting plate do not have to meet the same brief.

Do not equate a whole leg's weight with sliced meat

A bone-in leg includes bone and other material that will not become slices on your plate. Its price per kilogram is therefore not directly comparable with a prepared sliced pack's price per kilogram.

The usable amount varies with the piece and how it is carved. Avoid applying one universal yield percentage to every leg. If the comparison matters to your order, ask for product-specific guidance.

Compare like-sized sliced packs

Include the practical cost of the format

A whole leg requires a suitable setup, carving skill and a plan for using it. A sliced pack costs you less preparation time and lets you open a smaller amount at once. Neither format is automatically the better purchase.

Choose the quantity you can enjoy while following the product's storage instructions. Buying extra only helps if the extra food suits your household and plans.

A quick check before you choose

Is the cheapest pack the best value?

Not necessarily. Check both the price per comparable weight and the kind of ham you want. Value includes whether the format suits how you will use it.

Can I use the same calculation for a bone-in leg?

You can calculate the price per kilogram purchased, but that does not give the price per kilogram of usable slices. Keep the two measures separate.
